A Gentleman's Suicide

His tears fall
beneath the bubbles.

Making his bath
a sea of sorrow.

Alone, he cries.
In this tub, he hides.

His heart aches
from a tormented past.

Making his bath
a bed of bad memories.

Alone, he cries.
In this tub, he hides.

His shadows listen
as he speaks his secrets.

Making his bath
a couch of confession.

Alone, he cries.
In this tub, he hides.

His eyes watch
the blade on his skin.

Making his bath
a pool of blood.

Alone, he cries.
In this tub, he dies.

Commitment

Some people spend their whole life running from it, while others embrace it warmly. Whichever road you choose, commitment is seen everywhere. Jobs, relationships, personal goals, housework, children, arts, and many other things require the commitment of time and energy.

At the beginning of each month I write out a list of goals. I list three monthly goals, three six-month goals and three yearly goals. A goal on my yearly list is to be in a band. To work toward achieving this, I must commit to practicing the guitar an hour a day while writing poetry that could potentially become lyrics.

It seems that everything in our life takes some sort of commitment. When you start dinner, you are committing to finish it. When you read the first chapter in a book, you commit to reading it to the end. When a man gives a woman an engagement ring, he is committing to a wedding and a marriage.

Erase the fears of commitment, and simply accept that it is a part of life. It is the only way to get you where you want to go. Think of Thomas Edison, he did not create his inventions over night. It took much consuming time and energy to stay committed until the final product was birthed.

I challenge you to put pen to paper and write a goals list. In your mind know the steps it will take to achieve your goals, and start committing to them today!

Music Videos

Before YouTube there was MTV, before MTV there was Ed Sullivan. Wherever it comes from, visual music through technology is stimulating, entertaining, and enjoyable.

August 1, 1981 MTV broadcast their first 87 music videos. Featured artists ranged from The Who to Pat Benatar to Styx to David Bowie. Although music videos were being made well before 81, they had never been so easily accessible until this day.

At 13 I had a videocassette which functioned as a mix tape of my most beloved videos. This compilation of music entertainment was my most prized possession. One might say music was my first addiction.

The music footage I could discuss is immeasurable, so I will highlight my favorites from each generation, starting with the 50s up to the present.

1957 Elvis—Jailhouse Rock
1967 The Beatles—I am the Walrus
1970 Black Sabbath—Paranoid
1987 Poison—Talk dirty to me
1999 Korn—Freak on a leash
2005 Chiodos—All nereids beware
2008 Saturate—Soul Element

Happy listening and watching!

A walk at Midnight

You take me
away from myself.

You take me
away from this hell.
…………………….
A night with no moon
is a dark place to hide.

My fear is lost
with you here by my side.

The waterfalls flow
even in the cold.

For comfort and serenity,
your hand I will hold.
……………………………
You make me
sing and dance.

You make me
dream of sweet romance.

Got kids?

Having been the oldest of five children, I became an adult very swiftly. My siblings begged me to make my famous peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day after school. I was always their shoulder to cry on.

Their minds are like river waters flowing rapidly into an unknown destination. They sing, dance, and play. The sound of a child’s laughter could light up your whole day. They are simply the best gift God has ever given to us.

Many people do not understand the communication of these little people. They do not express themselves with words. They tell their story through art.

In the past, I was very close to a six-year-old. She drew a picture of a girl in a tie dye shirt. I asked her who the girl was, and she replied, "you." I noticed there were tears flowing from the figure’s head. I asked her why I was crying, and she said, "I don’t know."

Children are more intuitive than adults. They have a lot to say, but cannot find the right words. As they learn to talk, we should learn to listen.

Simplicity of Prayer

Although I don’t remember much from my childhood, I remember my first prayer. "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord, my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord, my soul to take." This short request to God was always followed by a kiss good night from my grandparents. Spending the night with the two of them was the only time I did not cry myself to sleep.

Some say it in silence, and some with a song, however one chooses, a prayer does not have to be long. It’s as easy as whispering "Help" in the morning and "Thank you" at night. When it comes to talking to God, there is no wrong or right.

Appeals and gratitude sent to the Heavens benefit the human more than the spiritual beings collecting them. When one directs these energies outward it is a form of letting go and acknowledging that we are not in control. Accepting that we do not govern our lives is the first step to freedom. The fear, anger, depression, and resentments will melt away.

At first, voicing concerns and thanksgiving is not easy. With time, one finds that God transforms from a mysterious man in a sky-palace made of gold to a dear friend that never leaves your side. Next time someone says, "let us pray," don’t run and hide.

Where is the rock?

I am disheartened to see what has become of the world of music. The golden age of Rock-n-Roll is dead. Guitar solos are practically non-existent. Our heroes and icons have moved from blood spitting Gene Simmons and shred king Randy Rhoads, to a hatching egg, that they call Gaga.

The bad boy image of rock is gone, and has been replaced by passive-aggressive slobs. Men once spent hours preparing their look for a concert performance. Today’s stage sees beards, dirty thrift store t-shirts, baggy pants, and baseball caps. These artists’ music hardly makes up for what they lack in the image department.

In the 60s and 70s there were a handful of bands to choose from. Now, we have so many bands flooding the Internet and local scenes that a person doesn’t know where to start. In my opinion, Nirvana was the last creative sound that defined rock star, and that was 1989.
